Covewater is proud to present the Santa Cruz premiere of two visually inspiring paddling films: Destination 3 Degrees and Lake Tahoe Circumnavigation. These films' appeal is not only to the stand up paddling community, but all who appreciate the ocean, nature and inspiring human pursuits.
While hundreds of surf movies have made their Northern California debut at the beloved Rio Theatre over the decades, this night will be a first of its kind—a stand up paddling movie premiere night. Please join us and the rest of the ocean-loving paddling community for an event that will always be "the first SUP movie night" in Nor Cal!
Film 1: Destination 3 Degrees
Three degrees of latitude separate the islands of Hawaii. Nine legendary and infamous open-ocean channels link them together. Drawn by ritual, necessity, competition and challenge, watermen have long conquered and been conquered by these channels…but never in an adventure quite like this.
Destination 3° is a standup paddle adventure across Hawaii’s legendary channels.
In April 2010, Jenny Kalmbach and Morgan Hoesterey, two of the world’s elite female standup paddleboarders, journeyed across each of these channels, setting competition aside to chase the ultimate prize: ocean adventure. Inspired by their love of the ocean, Destination 3° is more than a standup paddle adventure, more than an ocean challenge, and more than two women pushing the edges of themselves and their sport, it is a way to give back. (55 mins)
Film 2: Lake Tahoe Circumnavigation
Two paddlers set on a journey to paddle 24 hours non-stop around the entire perimeter of Lake Tahoe, a 72 mile course. Below freezing temperatures, shifting winds, lightning storms, and a night paddle full of obstacles and rocky shallows could easily bring their months of training (and, for one of them, a shot at redemption) to an end. The story of Lake Tahoe residents and noted athletes and paddlers, Jay and Anik Wild, and what two people can accomplish with enough determination, skill and boundless love for a lake - as well as one another. (25 mins.)
